Mindfulness workshop for people of color

 – with Céline –

Certified MBSR teacher of colour and facilitator at the Mindfulness Network for People of Colour in the UK

GENERAL INFORMATION

What we have in common is what makes us human. And yet we are so different from each other, so unique, so diverse…

However, sadly, what we have different from each other, instead of being looked at as our unique, fascinating features are often turned against us. Gender, race, religion…. you name it, are as many things that separate us from each other, limiting us, making us less rich inside, less connected, less loved.

This particular workshop is looking at race as feature that makes us different, and how can we turn it into a empowering feature. The main question we will ask ourselves during this workshop is: How can mindfulness help with racial trauma?

We will meet for half a day, practise together and learn some tools to use when we are caught up in strong emotions while talking about race or being the victim of racism.

This workshop is mainly based on Ruth King’s book “Mindful of Race. Transforming Racism from the inside out.”

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Who can take this course

If you are a person of color, and you feel that you need to reshape your relation with your race in a way that reinstates your dignity power and beauty, and also to readjust your attitudes, believes and behaviors to reflect this reality you are welcome to join this workshop

MBSR course setting

  • 1 sessions of 4 hours (1/2 days)
  • Currently only online courses are possible. As soon as possible face-to-face courses will be organized

What is included in the course

  • Formal practice – mindfulness meditation techniques, mindful movements techniques – sitting, lying, standing or moving
  • Informal practice using examples and situations from real life
  • Sharing experience in the group as well as personal exploration and guidance
  • Course handout to support the class teachings containing:
    • brief description of the mindfulness techniques learned in the class
    • specific teaching tools for learning various situations elements through a mindful perspective
    • information on stress physiology and our reactions to stressful situations
    • reading references and keys to understand various type of situations
  •  Audio recordings to support with the daily practice

What do you need for a successful experience?

  • The course does not request special preliminary knowledge and skills. It is based on the experience and personal observation of the participants both during the sessions, home practice and in daily life.
  • The mindfulness course outcomes are based on mobilising internal resources. Commitment to a daily practice of 20-30 minutes is expected when registering the course. While this requirement may seem difficult to achieve for some, it often proves to be easier than it looks, as the practice itself creates gradually the necessary space in our mind and life for the practice.
  • A quiet room for the daily practice, as much as possible
  • A yoga mat (or equivalent) for the mindful movements practice
